... for my MFA in film/video. i wonder if you guys would be so kind as to weigh in on what you think the school has to offer. i had a long talk with dan eisenberg and he was very cool. very candid, very forthcoming. and the program sounds really good. i'm wondering specifically, what do you think a private school and/or school with a rep like SAIC has to offer tangibly over either a public or less renowned institution ... something that would balance out going into a lot of debt!

Re: i'm thinking of applying to SAIC ...
Tue, December 2, 2003 - 3:05 PMI came out of film/video myself. I have fond/good memories of the experience. However, I have to say that that was a different era. The field was much more esoteric and the high-profile/private-school approach seemed more justified. Access to equipment was as important (if not more so) than access to good instructors/mentors. Nowadays, film/video is similar to painting or creative writing (other endeavors with low capital costs). The argument for those fields was whether the cost of art school was more beneficial than using those same funds to live on for 5-10 years while you worked out your art.
So it comes down to the people, and the quality of the experience they create. I'm certainly not an expert, but my sense is that SAIC's staff in that regard is aging and stagnating rather than young and vital. I'd love to be wrong, though.

Fri, February 25, 2005 - 2:58 PMGordon, I agree with Dee. If you live in NY or CA, you could get into a great State school and get your MFA for alot less than the 'Tute. Don't get me wrong, I love the 'Tute. I had the best time there. I'm trying to get into Oxbow on scholarship this summer.
It is the best for a reason. The undergrad. program was hard and the mfa program is harder. I just wish I had a wealthy husband or patron so I could get a mfa in art history there........oh, I just woke up ;-)
